Healthy gums form the foundation of your smile, yet chronic periodontitis affects millions of American adults. When bleeding gums, receding tissue, or loose teeth disrupt your daily life, you need care from a periodontist who can address these conditions with proven techniques and advanced technology.

At Advanced Periodontics of N.J., we serve Oradell residents with treatments designed to restore and maintain periodontal health. Led by Dr. Peto, a LANAP-certified clinician, Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, and former clinical instructor at UCLA, our practice combines clinical knowledge with patient-centered care. Dr. Peto’s published research on bone formation and cosmetic periodontal procedures ensures you receive treatment grounded in current scientific evidence.

Treating Gum Disease

Bacteria constantly form on your teeth in a sticky film called plaque. When plaque isn’t removed through daily brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar along and below the gum line. This buildup irritates gum tissue, causing inflammation known as gingivitis. Your gums may appear red, feel swollen, and bleed when you brush or floss.

Without treatment, gingivitis advances to periodontitis. The inflammation extends deeper, creating pockets between your teeth and gums where more bacteria accumulate. As your body’s immune system fights the infection, the connective tissue and bone supporting your teeth begin to break down. According to the American Dental Association, chronic periodontitis affects 47.2% of adults over 30 in the United States and can lead to loss of tissue and bone supporting the teeth. Beyond oral health, research links periodontal disease to increased risk of heart disease and diabetes complications.

For early to moderate gum disease, we perform scaling and root planing, removing plaque and tartar from below the gum line and smoothing root surfaces to promote healing. When disease reaches an advanced stage, we offer LANAP therapy, a minimally invasive alternative using laser energy to target diseased tissue while leaving healthy gums intact. Most patients report less discomfort and faster recovery compared to conventional surgical approaches.

Dental Implant Solutions

Tooth loss affects how you eat, speak, and feel about your appearance. Dental implants stop bone loss by functioning like natural tooth roots. Made from titanium, these posts integrate with your jawbone through osseointegration, creating a stable foundation for replacement teeth.

The implant process begins with a thorough evaluation, including digital imaging to assess your bone structure. During the surgical phase, we place the implant into your jawbone under local anesthesia or sedation based on your comfort needs. Over the next several months, the implant fuses with your bone. Once healing is complete, we attach the final restoration, whether a crown, bridge, or denture.

Single implants replace individual teeth without affecting adjacent teeth. For multiple missing teeth, implant-supported bridges offer stability without relying on natural teeth for support. Patients missing all teeth in an arch benefit from All-on-X systems, where four to six implants support a full arch of teeth.

Addressing Gum Recession

Gum recession exposes tooth roots, leaving them vulnerable to decay and sensitive to temperature changes. Recession develops from aggressive brushing, periodontal disease, genetics, or grinding your teeth. Soft tissue grafting rebuilds the gum line by positioning tissue over exposed roots. The graft integrates with existing tissue as you heal, protecting vulnerable root surfaces and reducing sensitivity. Patients concerned about gum recession can explore their treatment options through a consultation.

Some patients have excess gum tissue, creating what’s commonly called a gummy smile. Crown lengthening removes excess tissue and reshapes bone to expose more of the natural tooth, creating better proportions. We address various aesthetic and functional concerns in our conditions we treat section.
